Smart Nicosia: Nicosia Municipality and Nicosia Water Board signed a Memorandum of Understanding

Nicosia today, thanks to the operation of Smart Nicosia, has been transformed into an innovative, resilient and, above all, sustainable city. Modern infrastructure, services and systems record and reduce the consumption of resources, improving overall the daily life of its residents.

In this context, the Nicosia Municipality and the Nicosia Water Supply Council have made a very important move. Under the Memorandum of Understanding between the two parties, Smart Nicosia will place its expertise, systems and infrastructure at the disposal of the Water Supply Council for the installation of Smart Water Meters. What does this mean for Nicosia's water supply system? A lot of important things!

Smart Water Meters with automatic recording and continuous monitoring of the network will lead to a reduction in water lost through hidden leaks and will be an important step towards excellent water resource management and green growth.

As the Mayor of Nicosia, Mr. Konstantinos Yiorkatzis said in a statement: "We start with the installation of 3,000 water meters in the walled city but this is not the end... we continue with the coverage of Nicosia with over 150,000 water meters!

Water is vital. In countries like ours, where we have always had to fight against the lack of this precious commodity, its proper use and the prevention of losses is imperative and that is why we consider this cooperation with the Nicosia Water Boards of smart water management extremely important."

On behalf of the Nicosia Water Board, the Director Mr. Constantinos Parmaklis,, said: "The first 1,500 water meters will be installed in the walled city in cooperation with the Nicosia Municipality using the network (LoRa) and the Smart City Nicosia platform. This will be followed by the installation of a further 1,500 smart water meters using NBIoT dual-circuit telecommunication based technology to complete the pilot smart water meter installation programme. Our goal in the long term is the complete replacement of conventional water meters in the Nicosia district by smart water meters that will provide daily remote measurement and data that will help in the timely detection of leaks within the consumers' blocks and in the detection of leaks in the water supply zones and sub-zones within the urban fabric."

The Smart Nicosia project is implemented under the Cohesion Policy Programme "Thalia 2021-2027" with EU co-funding.
